Peoria and Jefferson Bolden

Peoria Hollin Scruggs Bolden was the fourth child born to Charlie & Ella Morris Scruggs
in Vineyard, Arkansas on May 25, 1916. Her birth mother, Ella Morris passed away when Peoria was
approximately two months old. After Charlie Scruggs remarried, her loving stepmother we grew to
know and love as Momma-Edie raised her.

Peoria was married to Jefferson Bolden for 58 years, until she departed this life on
October 11, 1989, and was a homemaker all her life.

Mother was a very soft spoken person, often having to have her repeat a statement
several times before you were clear on what she was saying and oftentimes never
hearing the end of her sentence.  She truly loved her family and took pride in caring for us.
She made sure the girls and the boys knew how to cook, sew and wash clothing.
Mother had a special gift in taking care of her neighbor(s).  If someone else needed a meal,
we made their plate first.  Mother never ate until all of her children were fed.

Our mom had a knack for being late no matter how early she began to dress.
Mom loved Ice Cream and bread sandwiches (that is, ice cream between two slices of bread – a
real ice cream sandwich).

Mom took all day to shop, stopping at every store on the way home/it’s suffice to say grocery
shopping was a trip.

Jefferson Bolden was the second child born was born January 15, 1911 in Rondo, Arkansas to
Mary Vivian Searcy Bolden and Will Bolden. Daddy’s father, Will Bolden passed away when he was
an infant, and Daddy had several other brothers and a sister, which we’ll tell you about on the
family tree page.

He was married for 58 years to the late Peoria Hollin Scruggs Bolden. Jefferson Bolden made his
living as a framer and worked long tedious hours to provide for his family. After retiring, he went to
the corner gas station and took a job pumping gas because he just couldn’t get use to not
working. At the age of 95 years old today, he is retired and residing in Marianna, Arkansas.

Daddy loves his family and always taught us to treat others with kindness and respect, do
unto others, as you would have them do unto you. He often referred to his life as “the blessings of
Abraham” to have such a large, growing, amazing and loving family. Daddy’s charge to this family has
Always been “help one another out, love one another in spite of differences, stick together, we’
re family!”

Daddy loves to tell stories of the olden days and how kind everyone was to him and
momma.  Daddy was always playful and would attempt to scare us with a story or some type of
prank. He loved playing and joking with his children, but he also liked asking thought provoking
questions. Daddy is famous for inventing words or pronouncing big words with different emphasis.
