Our Family Reunion History
In July 1975, the first reunion was held in Marianna, Arkansas at 250
West Main Street, which was the home of Jefferson, and Peoria Bolden at that time.
We also used the “Community Room” at the city library on West Main Street as well,
what a time we had! This first effort at a family-wide gathering was well attended. For
about 4 years, the reunion was held every year until the decision was made to start
meeting every other year. At one time, we met during the 4th of July holiday weekend.
Then it was moved to a weekend in August before settling on the last weekend in the
month of July.
Since that first reunion, the family has gathered in various locations.
These cities have included: Little Rock, Arkansas; South Bend & Indianapolis, Indiana;
Norwalk, Connecticut; Chicago, Illinois; Forrest City, Arkansas; Marianna,
Arkansas; and Memphis, Tennessee.
Over the years, the family reunion committees have always made an effort
to include all of the family branches. In the beginning, it was mainly the
Bolden-Scruggs side of the family. At the 1999 reunion held in South
Bend, Indiana, we were blessed to have one of the nephews and two great-nieces
of Jefferson Bolden in attendance. They represented the Tucker
side of our family. And so now the branch names in attendance include
not only Bolden and Scruggs but also Tucker, Morris and Searcy. At our
2001 reunion, our T-shirts reflected this acknowledgement.
Another effort we’ve always made is to include the youth of our family and their
many accomplishments, interests, and current events.
We feel that this is important because it is the young people who will
carry this reunion forward. Mrs. Mary Vivian Searcy Thomas, the mother of Jeff
Bolden and Edna McFadden, always encouraged this family to get
together as often as possible and to maintain a strong bond of love. Like
Mary Thomas, we are now preparing to pass the torch on to the next
generation so that the Bolden-Scruggs-Tucker-Morris-Searcy Family
Reunion will continue well into the next century.
